Alaska is one of the world’s most popular cruise destinations with a number of large ships, carrying thousands of passengers, docking in popular ports each day in summer. But Australian small ship cruise specialist, Cruise Traveller, has packaged up a special Alaskan experience with Ponant that will see the boutique vessel visit smaller, more remote and rarely visited places in Alaska that bigger ships cannot reach.
None of the destinations on the Alaskan cruise aboard Ponant’s 264-guest exploration ship, Le Soleal, are common features of itineraries for larger ships in the region including tiny, unspoilt and off-the-beaten-wake places like Kake, Petersburg, Metlakatla and Alert Bay, with their intact Tlingit, Tsimshian and Kwakiutl indigenous communities, wild scenery and abundant wildlife such as bears, moose, deer, bald eagles, whales, sea lions and otters. The Alaskan voyage also ventures waterways bigger ships don’t offer such as the mighty glaciers of Endicott Arm, the brooding majesty of Misty Fjords and the orca-dotted passage of Johnstone Strait.
The intimate and immersive experience is enhanced by the addition to the cruise of a tour through the Canadian Rockies including a ride aboard the iconic Rocky Mountaineer train and stays in the grandest hotels in the Rockies.
