Just exactly WHAT do you need to take with you on a tropical expedition? It’s not like you can run out to the shops and pick up any items you’ve forgotten when you are adventuring on the high seas to remote natural wonders is it?

We’ve answered this question in our latest blog, Dress Code: Adventure. Read on for more helpful packing hints…

Off the ship and out and about gear…

HEAD

Heat stroke is no joke when you’re adventuring and therefore, we cannot recommend highly enough a light-weight, wide-brimmed hat. Take two if you can and make sure at least one of them can be washed and dried easily for swimming and snorkelling.

Other notables for your face include polarized good quality sunglasses (two if you’re forgetful), reef-friendly sunscreen and a light pair of binocculars.

SHOULDERS

If it doesn’t have a collar, leave it at home. Make sure your shirts have long-sleeves, some have the ability to be rolled up like the example on the left here too. At the very least, look for quick drying fabrics that roll up in your bag. Light-weight with breathable fabrics are good choices too. Always pack an extra one, just to be safe.

Don’t forget a light breathable spray jacket – it might be hot, but nights on the water can be cool…

KNEES

Whether you swim in them or wear them to dinner, a couple of pairs of comfortable, light, quick-dry shorts will come in very handy. We also recommend a long pair of pants for hiking – for both sun protection and protection against insects and brush/plants etc.

A pair of togs (bathing suit) shouldn’t be forgotten. Whether its enjoying the onboard pool or spa or snorkelling off a turquoise coast, make sure it’s in your bag.

TOES

They say that an investment in your shoes, is an investment in happiness (don’t they?). Well if they don’t, they should, and there’s nothing more important than keeping your tootsies protected whilst out and about. Bring with you a pair of sturdy comfortable walking shoes or boots and a pair of hiking sandals for hopping into and out of the zodiacs at shore.

On the ship must-haves

Breakfast

The atmosphere on most expeditions is casual, but contrary to some opinions, your pajamas are NOT appropriate attire for the dining room. Or in-suite dining for this indulgent experience, but when fueling up for a day out and about, it is fine to wear your days chosen hiking outfit.

Lunch

Again, if you aren’t already out, or are enjoying a cruising day, casual is the name of the game. Bring comfortable clothes remembering that the ship is air-conditioned and you may need a light jacket or shawl.

Dinner

Many cruise expedition ships nominate dinner as ‘smart casual’ where shorts and t-shirts will not be permitted. Pack a few smarter evening outfits for the occasion. Men should pack a sports jacket and polo shirt. High heels are not recommended on any ship, so a pair of flats is the perfect solution.

Some ships also organise themed captains dinners or ‘white parties’, so packing a suitable outfit is recommended. Gala dinners may be on the agenda as well. Check prior to leaving as you may need to bring a tie or cocktail dress for the occasion.
