King George Falls

1st April, 2017: King George River & Falls, The Kimberley, Australia

Silver Discoverer – Silversea Expeditions

It was a “pinch yourself” moment for me as I sat on a zodiac feeling the cool spray from King George Falls tickle my face. I had imagined the Kimberley’s twin waterfalls many times, but it was a case of reality exceeding expectations. A very high rainfall this wet season (Nov-Mar), meant that the falls were at their most magnificent.

We chose a zodiac plus hike/climb option from the nearby base of the falls to swim in the pools at the top. The day dawned bright and clear as the early morning sun shone on red, orange, pink cliffs dotted with lush green spinafex grass. Tough trees clung to crevices in the rocks and we saw a Rock Wallaby neatly jumping over the rough terrain.

To see it up close is to imagine giants playing with blocks, then having half-finished, run off to play with something else.

We saw gigantic pieces of rock wedged precariously over huge chasms. Probably having been there like that, for thousands of years. The climb to the top of the hill required all four limbs and was challenging. Such a great feeling to make it to the top.

A bush fire the year before had cleared the scrub so the landscape was dotted with black tree trunks, while smooth sand stones with bright green/yellow saplings and wild flowers waved in the breeze above.

A rare thing to see – very blessed we were…

Note – Mrs Patton travelled as a guest of Silversea on this cruise.
