Fred Olsen and the Northern Lights

Laura from Cruise Traveller, along with a group of 10 agents from Australia and New Zealand, has recently returned from a Northern Lights winter cruise to Norway with Fred.Olsen. Their 10-day round-trip sailing from Newcastle was filled with bucket-list experiences which was made even more memorable by the distinctive Fred.Olsen Cruises’ charming and friendly cruise style. Following is Laura’s account of her trip.

Fred.Olsen offer an exceptional opportunity to witness the Northern Lights with their cost-effective round-trip itineraries departing from the United Kingdom, providing an affordable way to experience this breathtaking phenomenon.
The entire journey left us feeling like we had stepped into another world, where nature’s power, wildlife and serenity was on full display. We were fortunate enough to view the Northern lights from the ships deck where we experienced a powerful 90-minute show. We could not have timed it better as we were in the spa when the green lady appeared.

REINDEER
Feeding reindeer at the top of the Arctic Circle is a magical experience. In the snowy landscape, the reindeer approach eagerly, their breath visible in the cold air. Offering them snacks, you feel a connection to these magical animals and learn about ancient Sami traditions. The serene silence and jaw-dropping scenery in the background add to the beauty of this unique moment.

HUSKY DOGS
Meeting husky dogs and going dog sledding in Alta is an unforgettable adventure. We were greeted by the friendly, energetic huskies, their tails wagging ready for their days work. Once harnessed, the dogs take off through the snowy landscape, their strength and speed exhilarating, the bond between the dogs and their musher is obvious as the dogs take off through the snowy landscape. This followed by a very welcome hot drink and warm fire in a traditional Sami Lavvu afterwards

CROSSING THE ARCTIC CIRCLE
Sailing across the Arctic Circle allowed us to witness the raw beauty of one of the world’s most remote and pristine environments. To celebrate this milestone, Fred Olsen hosts a special Arctic Circle event where guests are invited to have ice-cold water poured over their heads. Of course, we couldn’t resist joining in on this unique tradition!

THE ATLANTIC ROAD
Our first stop was the picturesque town of Molde known as the city of Roses, where we traveled The Atlantic Road, a stunning drive along the Norwegian coast. This scenic route connects small islands with bridges and causeways, offering breathtaking ocean views and picturesque fishing villages. One of the highlights is the impressive engineering of the Storseisundet Bridge, which curves dramatically over the sea, making the journey even more exciting and memorable.

FRED OLSEN EXPERIENCE AND VALUE
Fred. Olsen delivers a relaxed and social atmosphere that feels like home from the moment you step aboard. With only 1300 other passengers onboard we were treated to attentive and personalised service and noticed a real sense of community from the staff as well as fellow passengers. Even the food served onboard felt home-cooked and comforting.
