Your River Cruise Packing List – Cruise Traveller

Your River Cruise Packing List

River cruises offer a unique blend of relaxation and exploration. Depending on the season, or the river, your mileage may vary, we recommend you adjust your luggage to suit the temperatures and experiences that fit your situation.

Daytime Attire (Cruise and Offshore)

  • Comfort is Key: Think lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. Pack comfortable walking shoes, as you’ll likely be doing a lot of sightseeing on foot.
  • Layer Up: Even in warmer climates, mornings and evenings can be cool. Pack top layers like light sweaters, cardigans, or a light jacket. This is especially important if you plan to spend plenty of time above deck taking in the views, as river breezes can be chilly.
  • Activity-Specific: If your cruise includes active excursions, pack appropriate attire. For example, if you’re doing a bike tour, bring athletic wear and comfortable sneakers. If water activities are planned, quick-dry clothing and water shoes are a must.
  • Climate Consideration: If traveling in colder climates, ensure to pack thermal layers, warm socks, waterproof shoes or boots, and a warm coat.

Evening Attire (Dinner)

Evening attire depends on the cruise’s dress code. Most river cruises maintain a relaxed atmosphere, but some evenings might call for smart casual.

  • Check the Dress Code: Most river cruises have a relaxed dress code, but some evenings might call for “smart casual.” Pack a few nice tops, dress pants, or skirts. One formal set of clothes is never a bad idea, but if you’re planning on keeping some space in your bags for souvenirs and shopping, a suit jacket or dress takes up a chunk of your real estate.
  • Comfortable Shoes: While you might want to dress up a bit, prioritize comfort. Heels are generally not recommended due to uneven surfaces on ships and cobblestone streets on shore.
  • Light Layers: Evenings on the river can get cool, so pack a light shawl, cardigan, or jacket, although you will almost always be eating in comfortable dining spaces.

Essentials

  • Travel Documents: Passport, visa (if required), cruise documents, and travel insurance. If you are ever unsure about what kind of documents you need for your cruise, it’s best to speak to your travel agent and they can compile a list to ensure you have exactly what you need. As always, make sure your travel documents are well protected and accessible.
  • Medications: Pack any prescription medications, along with pain relievers, motion sickness remedies, and any other necessary over-the-counter medications.
  • Electronics: Phone, charger, camera, and a portable power bank. Consider a universal adapter if traveling internationally. If you want to send updates to home, it can be a good idea to secure a SIM or ESIM for your trip overseas, this will also enable you to contact your Cruise Specialist if you encounter any problems or have any concerns prior to departure.
  • Toiletries: Pack travel-sized toiletries to save space, your cruise will have all the essentials you need, but it is always a good idea to bring some of your own preferred products. Sunscreen is a must!
  • First-Aid Kit: A small first-aid kit with bandages, antiseptic wipes, and pain relievers is important for your off-shore days.

Accessories

  • Sun Protection: Sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunscreen are essential, especially for daytime excursions and lounging on the deck.
  • Scarf or Shawl: Versatile for adding warmth or dressing up an outfit.
  • Jewelry: Keep it simple and minimal, bring too much and you might be stressing over losing your valuables, rather than enjoying your cruise!
  • Money Belt or Crossbody Bag: For keeping valuables safe when out exploring your ports of call. Depending on where you travel, this might be unnecessary, but better safe than sorry!

Optional Items:

  • Binoculars: Perfect for wildlife viewing and sightseeing.
  • Book or E-reader: For relaxing on deck or in your cabin.
  • Compact Daypack: For carrying essentials during shore excursions.
  • Travel Journal: To record your memories.
  • Reusable Water Bottle: To stay hydrated and reduce plastic waste.
  • Small Umbrella or Rain Jacket: For unexpected showers.
  • Noise Cancelling Earbuds: These can come in handy for flights and travelling in general.
  • Travel sized laundry detergent: If you wish to wash small items of clothing in your cabin, but, we would recommend doing your washing via the ship staff if possible.

Packing for a river cruise requires a balance of practicality and comfort. By focusing on layering, comfortable footwear, essential documents and medications, and a few key accessories, you can ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey. Remember to tailor your packing to the specific climate and activities of your chosen itinerary, and consider bringing a few optional items to enhance your overall experience. As always, try to pack as light as possible. It makes the travelling to your holiday portion of the trip easier, and gives you plenty of room to bring back souvenirs and gifts for friends and family (or yourself!).
