The Expedition Diaries – Talbot Bay & Horizontal Falls, The Kimberley Australia

Horizontal Falls, The Kimberley

5th April 2017: Talbot Bay & Horizontal Falls, The Kimberley, Australia

Silver Discoverer – Silversea Expeditions | Author: S.Patton, Cruise Traveller

Geology never seemed that interesting at school. How can it be then that rocks have never been more magnificent than they are in the Kimberley region here at Talbot Bay?

Layers and layers of red, pink, orange, white and black stone pushed upwards from ancient sea-floors and now dotted with green grasses and tough trees with roots clinging precariously at impossible angles.

The bay is filled with light blue water that almost seems irridescent or metallic in colour. The Horizontal falls are caused by two narrow necks where escaping tidal water is rushing out a small chasm faster than the gap will allow.

At certain tides it can cause one side of the falls to be up to 3 or 4 metres higher than the other and swirling trapped water forms eddies and whirlpools.

We firstly went by zodiac quietly through the bay and falls area and then later took a thrilling speedboat ride right through both necks.

What an amazing way to end our Kimberley adventure
