The Expedition Diaries – Montgomery Reef & Raft Point, The Kimberley, Australia
Montgomery Reef
4th April 2017: Montgomery Reef & Raft Point, The Kimberley, Australia
Montgomery Reef (am)
Who had ever heard of “neap” tides before this adventure through the Kimberley? Not I, and armed with this new knowledge that our water levels wouldn’t be too dramatic, we headed out on the zodiacs to Montgomery Reef. I guess you could say that expectations were lowered, but I still felt like the reef delivered.
As water cascaded down mini-waterfalls along kilometres the reef’s interior channel, I felt like the ocean was offering up a treasure to us all. Magnificent brown and white herons stalked or soared over the brown sandstone rich with marine breakfast pickings.
pm – Raft Point
We were met on Raft point by the traditional owners of the land and welcomed with smoke and ochre stripes on our faces.
It was hot and the walk a little tricky up the hill to the red cliffs that overhang and house this beautiful art. Our guide told us stories of how the pictures came to be and the tales behind each one.
The story of how they locals would fish using the half moon’s light on the water, and the story of Wadjinas-three who roamed the land in ancient Dreamtimes. Inspired, cleansed and improved, we headed back down and to the ship.
