Beautiful Bruges, Belgium

It’s spelt so many ways, but one thing is for sure, Brugge, Bruge, Bruges is one of the most special places in Europe that you may not have discovered yet. Cobblestone streets, meandering canals, pretty stone houses … we’re talking about Venice? No, but it is called the ‘Venice of the North’. We are talking of course about Bruges in Belgium.

Without a doubt, Bruges is at it’s most peaceful before the 10am crowds rush in from the trains, rivers and bus trips, so if you can get there early, a breakfast Belgian Waffle is mandatory.
Bruges is the kind of place that feels like it belongs in a fairy tale. Tucked away in the northwest of Belgium, this beautifully preserved medieval city charms visitors with its cobblestone streets, winding canals and rows of stepped-roof houses that look almost too perfect to be real. Often called the “Venice of the North,” Bruges invites you to slow down, wander and soak in its old-world atmosphere.

There are chocolate shops, fine beer establishments and fascinating history to enjoy. One of the best things about Bruges is the lack of modern phone lines, wires, cables etc that could take away from the authenticity of the city, you really feel like you are stepping back in time.

The historic centre of Bruges is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it’s easy to see why. At its heart lies the Markt, a lively square surrounded by colourful guild houses and dominated by the soaring Belfry of Bruges. Climb the 366 steps to the top and you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views across the city’s red rooftops and church spires. Nearby, Burg Square showcases some of the city’s most beautiful architecture, including the Gothic-style Town Hall.

Bruges is also a city of canals, and one of the best ways to experience it is from the water. A short boat cruise glides under ancient stone bridges and past quiet gardens, offering a different perspective of the city’s elegant buildings. Along the way, you’ll notice swans drifting along the canals — a symbol of Bruges for centuries.

Food lovers will find plenty to enjoy here as well. Belgium is famous for its chocolate, waffles and beer, and Bruges delivers on all three. Small chocolate boutiques line the streets, tempting visitors with handmade pralines and truffles, while cosy cafés serve golden waffles topped with cream or fruit. And of course, no visit is complete without sampling a local Belgian beer, many of which are brewed nearby.
Despite its popularity, Bruges still manages to feel wonderfully peaceful, especially in the early morning or evening when the day-trippers have gone. As the lights reflect softly in the canals and the medieval buildings glow in the fading light, it’s easy to understand why so many travellers fall in love with this enchanting Belgian city.
