Ships With Sails – Cruise Traveller

Ships With Sails

Cruise ships come in all sorts of sizes, styles and levels of comfort, but rarely with a set of sails. We discover here some of the select few ships that boast masts and rigging, that you can cruise upon, all around the world…

LE PONANT

The namesake of the Ponant fleet, Le Ponant is the only ship in their stable that boasts sails.

With only 16 staterooms, this 5 deck ship travels using wind/sail power, electric batteries and diesel engines. Le Ponant sails under a French flag and is 288 feet (87.78m) long.

Ponant says of this ship:

This legendary yacht offers a uniquely exclusive voyage experience. An ode to freedom and the treasures of nature.

Her total sail area is 1212 + 1000 square metres spinnaker. If you are looking for a truly ‘sexy’ yacht, Le Ponant is hard to ignore.

ROYAL CLIPPER

Officially recognised in 2001 by Guinness World Records as the world’s largest square rigger in service, Royal Clipper is the pride of Star Clipper’s tall ship fleet. Note – Star Flyer and Star Clipper are also tall ships with sails.

With 42 sails and a full 1760 square metres of open deck with a staggering, three swimming pools, this is a grand lady indeed.

For connoisseurs of sail cruising, the 134 metres Royal Clipper offers the ultimate sea-going experience, balancing the grandeur, adventure and tradition of sailing with the superb service, amenities and accommodations of the finest modern yacht.

Royal Clipper carries just 227 guests and even allows guests to look out on the crow’s nest by climbing the rigging (with a safety harness provided).

Five masts top a ship that also boasts an easy-access marina platform for watersports. Relaxed dress codes are the order of the day onboard.

Wind Star

Wind Surf, Windstar Cruises’ flag ship, was significantly renovated in November 2019.

Her sheets include 7 triangular computer-operated sails with 2600 square metres of surface area that adorn five 67.5 metre tall masts.

When wind and engines are operating in harmony, this ship can reach speeds of up to 15 knots.

On any day, our 342-guest flagship, Wind Surf, the world’s largest sailing ship, draws admiring glances as she glides majestically into port with her tall sails billowing.
