Five Free Things to do in (and around) Perth
For those lucky enough to live in Western Australia, Perth might not seem like a novel destination, but to those who don’t, it is just that. Further from Sydney than Fiji, closer to Bali than Brisbane, and only a hop-skip-and-a-jump across to Africa, Perth is worth that extra night stay….
Kings Park & Botanical Gardens
Perth’s massive inner city park – Kings Park – is a day out that will only cost you the soles of your walking shoes. The park features ancient boab trees, easy to riduculously hard walking tracks (you choose) and the view from the top is worth the effort. It is worth noting that this is also the largest inner city park in the world!
Western Sunsets
For East Coast Australians, Perth will give you your first opportunity to see the sunset OVER the Indian Ocean. We recommend you pick a nice spot on Cottesloe or Scarborough beach, with your favourite glass of vino or beer and toast the experience.
Wonderful Wines
Not all great W.A drops are found at Margaret River – in fact – just 25 minutes from the city centre, the Perth Hills hosts a plethora of boutique vineyards. Why not rent a car (not free) and enjoy a drive through the Darling Ranges, Chittering Valley and Jarrahdale. Who knows who you might meet? What tastes you might discover? Regional specialties include: Shiraz, Viognier, Tempranillo, Mourvedre, Zinfandel and Durif.
Elizabeth Quay
Perth is all about the Swan River, it’s true, and Elizabeth Quay is just a short trip on Perth’s free CAT bus. The Quay has a wonderful riverside trail where you can explore landscaped gardens, public art and more while you travel on the promenade. Quite often there are special events at Elizabeth Quay, so check out the local calendar to see what might be on when you next visit.
Yagan Square
Completed in 2018, Yagan Square links the eclectic suburb of Northbridge with the city centre. It is an important aboriginal community space, named after Nyoongar warrior leader, Yagan. This area is full of digital, traditional and live artworks. There are food vendors and niche bars to relax in between your artistic discoveries and all in all, it’s a fantastic afternoon/evening destination.
