Award Winning Film Makers – Sailing for Good

Canadians, Robert and Vanessa Moberg, have always had a passion for the natural environment and capturing it for the world to see but their newest adventure aims to help combat the effects of climate change and raise awareness of the importance of eco-friendly travel.

Proudly sponsored by Cruise Traveller, the award-winning, film-making couple, known for productions such as ‘Bighorns at the Junction’ and ‘Turbidity – The Mt. Polley Mine Disaster’, have decided to give up life as they know it and embark on a new adventure that will see them living full-time aboard a sailboat, maintaining an eco-friendly way of life and documenting their journeys.

The idea came about whilst Robert and Vanessa were working on an Adventure Canada cruise, (expedition cruises sold by Cruise Traveller) in the North-West passage in the remote Arctic.

“I was amazed to see a small sailboat anchored near a remote glacier. It really stayed with me for some reason, so I started looking at the possibility of living aboard a sailboat and travelling the world,” said Robert. “Admittedly, it seemed to be a grandiose and unrealistic pipe dream as neither of us had ever sailed before.”

Vanessa didn’t need any convincing and was immediately on-board with the idea and within six months they had purchased a sailboat.

“The key was we didn’t want to do it for a hobby. We wanted a purpose, a mission. ‘Sailing for Good’ was the result,” explained Robert.

The 1976-built, 10m-long sailboat named ‘For Good’ has been the home to Robert and Vanessa since April 2019, after the couple left their Williams Lake home in British Columbia, Canada. They have been enjoying their new lifestyle despite some early hiccups as they make their way along the British Columbian coastline.

“We had no sailing experience whatsoever. Our first 10 days aboard ‘For Good’ were quite dismal. Cold rain fell on us as we loaded our belongings onto the boat. Everything was damp and cold, with temperatures almost at freezing point overnight.

“Eventually we made our way to the small coastal town of Gibsons. A local instructor reached out to us after hearing our story. She took us through the basics and after a couple of weeks we were back on our feet and ready to go.”

The two nature lovers have been documenting beautiful and pristine natural environments for years but with the threat of climate change and pollution overwhelming the planet, Robert and Vanessa have started this project to raise awareness and use their talents to make help make a difference.

“We believe that each of us can make a difference and we all have unique skills and resources we can put to work. As filmmakers, we can share our own story and the stories of others doing what they can to make the world a better place,” Robert said.

After meeting Robert and Vanessa on a cruise of the North West Passage in the Canadian Arctic, The Managing Director of Cruise Traveller, Craig Bowen, was taken by the passion they showed to protecting the environment. Craig said: “Protecting the environment is important to Cruise Traveller and I felt it was very appropriate to sponsor their project which will give us access to the stories and footage they produce, which we will be able to use to further educate our guests before, during and after they have travelled on one of our many adventures.”

With all corners of the world so accessible these days, travellers are seeking out more remote destinations to explore. These far-flung places have very sensitive ecosystems that could be put in danger if companies don’t do the right thing, which is why Cruise Traveller actively selects cruise lines that have strong ethics in eco-friendly travel. As Craig said: “As Cruise Traveller takes over 1500 guests each year to remote and exotic parts of the world , I feel we have a responsibility to showcase both the stunning experiences that nature provides but, most importantly, to educate guests on the challenges that these amazing destinations and their inhabitants – both humans and animals – are facing.”

Grateful for Cruise Travellers’ backing, Robert described the support as invaluable.

“Responsible travel, knowledge, environmental stewardship and the timeless quest for adventure are deeply held values we share. Like Cruise Traveller and other eco-friendly companies, the Sailing for Good project strives to communicate a sense of adventure – with purpose,” Robert said.

As they make their way along the British Columbia coast to a spectacular region known as Desolation Sound, the film-making couple is excited to share their adventure with the world. “We will produce a lot of shareable content in the form of photographs, behind the scenes clips, a blog and a feature length documentary,” Robert said.

This is just the beginning for the adventurous duo as their goal is to travel the world producing content to help make a difference. “It’s our goal to ensure we have done all we can to protect and heal this beautiful blue planet,” said Robert.
