From clan seats to royal residencies, Scotland has no shortage of stunning and romantic castles and palaces, and the east coast is home to many. Picturesquely situated and packed with history, they have endured prolific battles and many of those left standing were once home to royals or other significant figures.

Leaving the capital in your wake, you plot a course for Dundee and venture ashore to discover Scotland`s design museum, the V&A, which showcases the brilliance of Scottish creativity. The iconic crowning place of Scottish kings, Scone Palace has a history which stretches back over 1,000 years. Designed by William Adam, with stunning vistas overlooking Montrose Basin, House of Dun is every inch the perfect Georgian house of baroque extravagance. Built in 1743, it is filled with treasures that tell the stories of the people who lived there. Standing against a backdrop of rolling hills and set within glorious gardens, discover a labyrinth of cultural history at Crathes Castle and experience its towers, turrets and stories of its resident ghosts. Based in the bustling port of Fraserburgh, the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses tells the great story of the Northern Lighthouse Board, the engineers who built the lights and the keepers who tended them. Your final architectural gem is Cawdor Castle; dating from 1370, the castle was built as a private fortress by the Thanes of Cawdor, a family made famous by Shakespeare`s play `Macbeth.`

Guest Speaker – Julia Marwood: Julia has a lifelong passion for art. After early retirement from her career teaching German and English, she now has the great pleasure of spending all day every day looking at and talking about art – apart from when she is wild swimming or learning Scottish Gaelic! She particularly enjoys visiting galleries in Scotland to indulge her love of the Glasgow Boys, Glasgow Girls and Scottish Colourists. As an Accredited Arts Society Lecturer – and a tour guide at Manchester Art Gallery – she loves to share the joy of looking at art.

The challenge as with her sister vessel ‘Lord of the Glens’ was to craft a vessel that could both transit the intricate waters of the Caledonian Canal as well as navigate the sheltered waters around Scotland’s hauntingly beautiful fretted west coast, the result being the splendid ‘Lord of the Highlands’. Its elegance calls to mind that of a luxury yacht.

There are 19 outward facing state cabins spread over two decks each named with references to John Buchan’s “THIRTY-NINE STEPS”. Each cabin is finished in hardwood finishes, plush carpeting, dressing table, stool, wardrobe, satellite tv, and en suite facilities with shower, wc and washbasin. All state cabins are air conditioned and heated with an internal telephone and picture windows.

All sailings are made during daylight hours and overnight moorings are alongside with no tendering required. At each port of call there is time to independently explore as well as a programme of included shore visits. Dependent on the itinerary these include Culloden & Clava Cairns, West Highline Line to Glenfinnan, Isle of Iona, Clan Donald Centre on Skye and Eilean Donan Castle.

The cuisine is excellent, freshly prepared onboard by a loyal and long serving brigade of chefs, drawing on the rich bounty of locally sourced produce. What could be more delightful than to awake to the prospect of a full scottish breakfast and for early risers to take advantage of the complimentary hot beverages that await in the lounge and for that matter for the rest of the day as well?

Lord of the Highlands was constructed by Spanish craftsmen in Vigo for completion in July 2019 but will only enter passenger service in May 2020.
