One of the most remote communities in the world, Palmerston Island lies within a brilliant turquoise lagoon formed by a coral atoll in the northern Cook Islands. Six small islets sit within an 11-kilometre-wide ring of reef, creating a protected haven rich in marine life.Originally known as Avarau, meaning “200 harbours”, the island was sighted by Captain James Cook in 1774 and later named for Lord Palmerston of the British Admiralty.
