Follow the storied Danube, the ‘River of Kings,’ through Hungary, Slovakia, and Austria – where grand capitals, fairy tale castles, and charming villages await, along with a private evening at an elegant palace.
From Budapest to Vienna, the Danube comes alive in the light of autumn, its warm colors glowing against the river. Experience three capital cities across three countries in a river cruise just under a week – a perfect introduction to the “River of Kings.” Meet your Tauck riverboat in Budapest before exploring Bratislava on a guided walking tour. In Vienna, the choice is yours: tour the Habsburgs’ summer residence, Schönbrunn Palace, or admire masterworks at the city’s fine art museum – followed by a Tauck Exclusive evening of dining and waltzes at a private palace. Pause from city life in Melk and Dürnstein as you sail past ruins and vineyards through the iconic Wachau Valley, sampling its celebrated wines along the way. Return to Vienna for another day of guided sightseeing and local flavors.

Day 1
Tour begins: 4:00 PM, Budapest. A transfer is included from Budapest Franz Liszt International Airport or Budapest Keleti Train Station directly to your riverboat docked in Budapest. Tonight, please join us for a briefing followed by our welcome toast in the Panorama Lounge and dinner in the Compass Rose.

Day 2
Wake up in Budapest, the “Pearl of the Danube.” Each morning begins with an optional yoga session led by a dedicated instructor. Then, join the chef for a stroll through local markets, discovering seasonal specialties and regional flavors. Split in two, the city reveals its dual character: Buda, with its hilly terrain and historic charm, and Pest, a cosmopolitan hub home to the Hungarian Parliament Building, St. Stephen’s Basilica, and Váci Street. This afternoon, explore both sides of the capital on a guided tour, including Castle Hill, Matthias Church, and admission to Fisherman’s Bastion – fascinating historically, and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 3
Sandwiched between Hungary and Austria, Bratislava is the only capital in the world that borders two countries at once. This afternoon, Bratislava comes into view, a city framed by vineyards and the Little Carpathian Mountains, known for its distinctive, red-tiled roofs. Explore the City of Kings on a guided walking tour, with stops at Hviezdoslav Square, the neoclassical Slovak National Theatre, Primate’s Palace – originally built for a bishop in the late 1700s – and the charming Old Town, where cars are prohibited. Choose to spend the remainder of the day as you please, then rejoin the riverboat for evening entertainment.

Day 4
In a city celebrated for its Baroque streetscapes, imperial palaces, and home to musical geniuses like Mozart and Beethoven, you’ll have the chance to appreciate Vienna through one of two morning excursions. Choose a guided visit to the lavish Schönbrunn Palace, the Habsburgs’ summer residence, boasting 1,441 rooms and over 300 years of history. Alternatively, explore the Kunsthistorisches Museum, built in 1891 to house the impressive art collections of the imperial family. After lunch, either aboard the riverboat or in town, the afternoon is yours to explore at leisure, with convenient shuttle service to and from the ship. We invite you to join us at Palais Pallavicini for a Tauck Exclusive evening of dining and musical performances in elegant Viennese style.

Day 5
This morning, your riverboat arrives in Melk for a visit to the 11th-century Melk Abbey, a majestic Benedictine monastery perched above the Danube. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the abbey is still an active monastery known for its Baroque architecture, grand library, and centuries of history. Afterward, cruise through the Wachau Valley, where vineyard-covered hills and terraced slopes unfold along the Danube. In Dürnstein, choose from a variety of excursions: a guided walking tour of the storybook village or a challenging bike ride through the valley (not suitable for beginners). Additionally, choose to set out on an optional hike to the Kuenringerburg ruins, offering panoramic views and tales of King Richard the Lionheart. Later this afternoon, taste the elegant, mineral-driven white wines from the vineyards you glimpsed along your journey before rejoining the ship for the chef’s signature dinner and evening activities to follow.

Day 6
Austria’s cuisine is a vibrant mosaic of flavors, shaped by the many cultures once united under the Habsburg Empire and its unique position at Europe’s crossroads. During your city tour of Vienna, you’ll have the chance to sample traditional bites along the way. Begin along the elegant Ringstrasse, a grand circular boulevard lined with imperial landmarks, museums, and palaces, before choosing your preferred pace of exploration – either a relaxed walking tour through Vienna’s charming downtown or a more active journey through the storied lanes of the Old Town. After tasting the city’s culinary and cultural delights, enjoy free time to sightsee as you wish, with shuttles operating from the Albertina to the riverboat. Return to the ship to mingle with fellow travelers during an onboard social hour.

Day 7
Tour ends: Vienna. Fly home anytime. A transfer is included from the riverboat to Vienna International Airport or Vienna Central Station; please allow a minimum of 3 hours for international flight check-in.
