Setting sail from Rio de Janeiro, our first port of call is Búzios, the beach town popularized by Brigitte Bardot in the 1960s. Salvador da Bahia follows, with its Renaissance-era architecture, then the beaches of Maceió and vibrant Recife. Some time at sea brings us to Santarém, where the Tapajós and Amazon rivers meet, before we venture into the Amazon rainforest, calling at the riverside towns of Boca da Valeria, Manaus, Parintins, and Alter do Chão. Now to Devil’s Island, a fascinating former penal colony in the Iles du Salut, before we island-hop around the Caribbean. First is Roseau, the colorful capital of Dominica; then French- and British-influenced Basseterre in Saint Kitts; lively San Juan, Puerto Rico; the jungles of Samaná in the Dominican Republic; and the white-sand beaches of Grand Turk in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Fort Lauderdale in the U.S. beckons briefly, then it’s over to Bermuda, to discover the historic Royal Naval Dockyard. Back in the U.S., bask in the bright lights of New York City, our final destination.
