Day 1 – New Orleans, LA
Settle into your hotel and enjoy a feast for your senses as you explore this magical city, renowned for its delicious cuisine, vibrant music scene, and rich culture with an international flair. Stroll the tree-lined avenues, take a carriage ride through the French Quarter, hop aboard a streetcar to the gorgeous Garden District, or visit the renowned National World War II Museum.

Day 2 – Day of River Cruising
Board your ship and wave goodbye to New Orleans as your Mississippi River cruise begins. Traveling north, the scenery shifts from the city’s iconic waterfront to a working river corridor. Levees line the banks, cargo vessels move through the channel, and bustling port facilities showcase the river’s vital role in American trade and transportation.

Day 3 – Oak Alley, LA
This iconic Southern estate is renowned for its oak-lined avenue, stretching majestically toward the Mississippi River. Built in the early 19th century, the Greek Revival mansion radiates charm with its grand architecture and lush gardens.

Step back in time as you explore the meticulously preserved interiors and learn about the property’s history, including its role in the sugar industry and the profound impact of the Civil War on the estate and its residents. Stroll the quiet grounds where wartime tensions once loomed, and hear stories of how the conflict reshaped daily life. Each room, artifact, and ancient oak reflects the resilience and complexity of this era.

Day 4 – Baton Rouge, LA
Stand on the hallowed grounds of where the Battle of Baton Rouge, a land and naval conflict, took place on August 5, 1862.

During this battle, Union troops were positioned in the center of Baton Rouge, while the Confederates lined up north of the city. Bitter fighting took place, especially around Magnolia Cemetery. Commander, Thomas W. Cahill led a retreat back to the prepared defensive lines protected by Union warships which began firing at Confederate troops. Not long after, the Confederate ironclad CSS Arkansas arrived to provide support against Union ironclad USS Essex, but her engines failed just four miles above the city. The Union victory halted Confederate attempts to recapture the capital city of Louisiana.

Day 5 – Day of River Cruising

Day 6 – Natchez, MS
In small groups, explore Natchez, once a trading center and home to many of the wealthiest people in Mississippi.

When the Union fleet approached, there was a great fear of losing this wealth. After several shots in the fall of 1862, the town elected to surrender, rather than be destroyed by Union cannon fire. Today, Natchez is an intact example of the antebellum city that existed before the conflict, with many descendants of Civil War soldiers still living in the town.

Nearby Port Gibson, however, was the site of several conflicts during the Civil War and was significant to Ulysses S. Grant’s Vicksburg Campaign. Because Grant believed the city was “too pretty to burn,” many of Port Gibson’s historic buildings also survived the Civil War.

Day 7 – Vicksburg, MS
In the spring of 1862, Vicksburg became the remaining point of Union defense of the Mississippi River. During the siege, which lasted about one year, Union forces controlled all approaches to Vicksburg and by early June 1863 the Confederate garrison was on the brink of starvation and desperately low on ammunition. On July 4, 1863, Vicksburg’s commander, Gen. John C. Pemberton surrendered the city.

At Vicksburg Military Park Battlefield, walk the grounds that the Union and Confederate forces occupied during the 47-day siege as your guide leads you through the events and people who fought here. Visit some of the structures that survived the siege and learn about the people who lived in the historic neighborhood at that time.

Day 8 – Day of River Cruising
Today, we cruise from historic Vicksburg toward the rhythm and blues of Memphis. Along the way, watch the Mississippi shift from dense forest to sandy shores. River towns and larger cities alike line the banks, each shaped by the culture and cadence of life along the water.

Spend time on the sun deck taking in the scenery or unwinding indoors as the river carries you forward. Later, gather with new friends in the lounge to share the day’s adventures, enjoy cocktail hour, and end the evening with a dinner inspired by regional flavors.

Day 9 – Memphis, TN
The battle of Memphis, which took less than two hours in the early morning hours of June 6, 1862, resulted in the immediate surrender of the city of Memphis to federal authority by noon that day. This was one of the first brown water naval battles that demonstrated the power of the Union fleet, shocking Confederate forces and opening the upper Mississippi for the Union attacks on Vicksburg.

As you travel the riverfront, you can understand the magnitude of the battle and the concern of civilians who lined the bluffs to watch the combat, which ended with all, but one Confederate vessel destroyed and approximately 100 Confederate casualties and another 150 taken prisoner.

Day 10 – Day of Cruising

Day 11 – Paducah, KY
Residing at the confluence of the Tennessee River and the Ohio River, Paducah will make you feel as if you stepped back in time. Founded by William Clark (of Lewis and Clark), Paducah is known as a National Heritage Destination with many talented culinary artists, painters, potters, and jewelers creating and displaying their works there. Also known as “Quilt City,” there is plenty to do in Paducah from shopping to visiting one the many fine museums, to participating in a hands-on creative workshop at a local art gallery. Be sure to visit the Railroad Museum, featuring equipment and memorabilia from the romantic past of America’s railroads.

Day 12 – Day of River Cruising

Day 13 – Dover, TN
Nestled along the Cumberland River, Dover is a small, welcoming town where scenic landscapes and rich American heritage come together. The town is best known for the 1862 Battle of Fort Donelson, a defining Civil War engagement that marked a turning point in Ulysses S. Grant’s rise as a key Union leader.

Visit this well-preserved site, where rangers and guides are ready to welcome you and bring the past into focus. Begin with a short introductory film, then step onto the grounds to walk the earthen fortifications, stand at the surrender site, and reflect at the National Cemetery. Along the way, learn how each side approached the battle and how its outcome shifted the momentum of the Civil War.

Day 14 – Clarksville, TN
Named for General George Rogers Clark, the famed frontiersman and brother of William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, Clarksville blends frontier legacy with a modern, energetic spirit.

At Dunbar Cave State Park, explore a natural landmark with a surprising musical past, where legends like Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Lena Horne, and Tommy Dorsey once performed in its unique underground venue. Visit Old Glory Distilling Co., where you’ll tour a small-batch operation crafting Tennessee whiskey, bourbon, and other spirits, followed by a tasting that highlights traditional methods and local craftsmanship.

Finally, step into the Customs House Museum & Cultural Center, a striking 1898 landmark showcasing rotating exhibitions, fine art, sculpture gardens, and architectural details that make it one of the most photographed buildings in the state.

Day 15 – Nashville, TN
From iconic studios to legendary stages, Nashville is widely celebrated as the cultural capital of country music and the beating heart of its publishing, songwriting, and recording industry.

Take a narrated exploration of historic downtown highlights, including Honky Tonk Row, Bicentennial Park, and the Tennessee State Capitol. Visit the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, home to rare recordings, films, instruments, and memorabilia that trace the evolution of country music.

Step into the storied Ryman Auditorium, built in 1880 as the Union Gospel Tabernacle and later transformed into a revered stage for country legends and rising talent alike. Conclude your visit with an unforgettable evening at the Grand Ole Opry, where live performances showcase both emerging artists and longtime members of country music’s most celebrated tradition.

Day 16 – Board American Mariner in Washington, D.C.
After your amazing cruise along the Mississippi River and its tributaries, we will transport you and your luggage to the airport to begin the next part of your journey. Upon arrival in Washington, D.C., board American Mariner to begin your once-in-a lifetime cruise along Chesapeake Bay.

Be welcomed aboard by our friendly crew and take time to relax and settle into your spacious stateroom. Relax in one of the lounges alongside your fellow travelers as you reminisce about the memories already made and the adventures that lie ahead.

Day 17 – Day of Cruising
On our journey from Atlanta to Macon, we will be close to Sherman’s route on his March to the Sea. From November 15 until December 21, 1864, Sherman led some 60,000 soldiers on a 285-mile march from Atlanta to Savannah, Georgia. Sherman’s March to the Sea would frighten Georgia’s civilian population into abandoning the Confederate cause as Sherman’s soldiers destroyed everything in their path. They stole food and livestock and burned the houses and barns of people who tried to fight back.

Sherman wrote: “You cannot qualify war in harsher terms than I will. War is cruelty, and you cannot refine it; and those who brought war into our country deserve all the curses and maledictions a people can pour out.”

Day 18 – Norfolk, VA
Led by your dedicated guide, learn about the significant role this battle and the city of Norfolk played during the Civil War.

On March 9, 1862, the Battle of the Monitor and the Merrimac, would ring in a new era of naval warfare as the first duel between ironclad warships. Salvaged by the Confederates, the Northern-built Merrimack, a steam frigate covered in heavy armor plating, was rechristened the CSS Virginia. The USS Monitor sailed into Chesapeake Bay to defend the Union’s wooden fleet. For four hours, the vessels circled one another, competing for position. Both sides fired their guns to no avail, as the cannon balls simply deflected off of the iron ships.

By the early afternoon, the Virginia pulled back to Norfolk. Neither ship was gravely damaged, but the Monitor effectively ended the threat that the Virginia had posed to the Union fleet and played a major role in maintaining Union control over this significant southern port. This battle had brought into question a reliance on wooden warships and by the end of the Civil War, the Confederates and Union launched over 70 ironclads.

Day 19 – Norfolk, VA
Dedicate another day to exploring this popular port. Visit one of the region’s most revered attractions, the Military Aviation Museum, home to one of the largest private collections of World War II and Korean War era fighters, bombers, trainers, and seaplanes in the world, and a key attraction within Virginia’s Historic Aviation Coastline. Enjoy a guided exploration of the galleries and shopping in the gift shop, stocked with all things flight-related.

Day 20 – Day of Cruising

Take a moment to unwind on your personal balcony or join in the fun of kite flying on the upper deck. Day 21 – Yorktown / Jamestown, VA
Williamsburg, Yorktown, and Jamestown collectively comprise the renowned “Historic Triangle,” each site echoing pivotal moments in American history.

Day 22 – Williamsburg, VA
Colonial Williamsburg, meticulously restored to its 18th-century splendor, once served as the capital of Britain’s vast empire in the New World. This notable site was the vital political and economic center of the Virginia Colony and has evolved into the premier living history museum on the globe.

Stroll through the cobblestone streets of Old City, where you can encounter celebrated landmarks, colonial-era buildings, and incredible museums. Set within Pennsylvania’s historic Delaware Valley region, Philadelphia offers unmatched depth for those seeking to understand the nation’s earliest chapters.

Start the day with a visit to Independence Hall. Stand in the Assembly Room, the very place where the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution were both signed, and learn about the many important events that happened there.

Continue to the Liberty Bell, a powerful symbol of American liberty. This famous bell was originally used to summon lawmakers to legislative sessions and to alert citizens of public meetings. Initially hung in the steeple of what is now Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell is currently housed in the Liberty Bell Center within Independence National Historical Park.

Day 27 – Gettysburg, PA
On an exploration of Gettysburg National Park, the history of the battle that defined the Civil War comes alive. Day 29 – Gettysburg, PA / Baltimore, MD
Today marks the final leg of your journey. Departing from Gettysburg, enjoy a scenic drive to the airport to begin your travels home.
