15 Night Cruise sailing from Darwin to Benoa aboard Silver Discoverer.

Gather stories of a lifetime, on a voyage of profound experience and immense beauty. Immerse yourself in a culture where the dead are cared for among the living, and immense, vibrant funeral celebrations are extraordinary week-long affairs. You’ll carry away memories of encounters with rusty-coloured orang-utans, observations of clownfish weaving amongst the arms of brightly coloured anemones, and seeing Ijen Crater’s eerie blue flames with you.

Highlights of this cruise:

Darwin is Australia’s most colorful, and exotic, capital city. Surrounded on three sides by the turquoise waters of the Timor Sea, the streets are lined with tropical flowers and trees. Warm and dry in winter, hot and steamy in summer, it’s a relaxed and casual place, as well as a beguiling blend of tropical frontier outpost and Outback hardiness. Thanks to its close proximity to Southeast Asia and its multicultural population it also seems more like Asia than the rest of Australia. Darwin is a city that has always had to fight for its survival.

Leti Islands
The Leti Islands are part of the “Forgotten Islands” of the Maluku Province of Indonesia. This long chain of archipelagos has been largely isolated from the rest of Indonesia and indeed, the world for generations. Leti Island proper is in fact, one of Indonesia’s southernmost islands located between the Banda and the Timor Sea, near Timor Leste. Leti Island supports a population of approximately 7000 people, mostly living along the shore, whose society is matrilineal and whose native language is also known as Leti.

Bau Bau
Buton Island seems to be small compared to its neighbor Sulawesi, but with slightly more than 4,400 square kilometers (just under 1,700 square miles) it is Indonesia’s 19th largest island. Much of the lowland consists of uplifted karst and other limestone formations. Due to its hilly topography it still has a considerable amount of forest; most of it is seasonal tropical lowland forest with mangroves in coastal areas.

Pare Pare
Neolithic sites recently discovered in West Sulawesi bear witness to man’s presence on the island for millennia. Buddhist artifacts dating from the 4th & 5th centuries were discovered in South Sulawesi. This region was with its protected bays an ideal spot on the trade routes to drop anchor. In fact, the Bugis are reputed for their gift of boat building. The first Western visitors were Portuguese and, as many of their ships were wrecked off the coast of Minahassa, they gave the name “Celibes’ (formidable) to the island.

Tanjung Wangi
The port of Tanjung Wangi on the eastern tip of East Java provides access to the culture-rich city of Banyuwangi; the capital city of the regency of the same name. Tanjung Wangi is an active port hosting a ferry service between the islands of Java and Bali. It is also the main jumping-off point for the Baluran and Alas Purwo National Parks. The port is located in a volcanically active area below the breathtaking Ijen plateau with its stunning mountainous scenery.

Bali really is as alluring as everyone says. This island, slightly bigger than Delaware, has it all: beaches, volcanoes, terraced rice fields, forests, renowned resorts, surfing, golf, and world-class dive sites. But what sets Bali apart from other nearby tropical destinations is Balinese tradition, and villagers dedicated to celebrating it. The hundreds of temples, dances, rituals, and crafts linked to their ancient Hindu faith aren’t a show for tourists, but a living, breathing culture in which visitors are warmly received by the Balinese, who cherish their own identities.

Silversea’s loyal following of adventure travellers can now explore the remote archipelagos of the vast Pacific aboard the sleek, 116-guest Silver Discoverer cruise ship. She’s the perfect platform for viewing these untamed landscapes, with all ocean-view suites and plenty of deck space so that a breaching whale or a pod of dolphins is always within sight. Silver Discoverer’s shallow draft allows her to navigate closer to shore, and with a fleet of 12 Zodiacs, guests can land on isolated shores and explore wetlands and submerged ecosystems, up-close and in-depth.
