12 Night cruise departing from Fremantle to Benoa onboard Silversea Muse.

Wave goodbye to the craggy coasts of Australia and hello to the gentle shores of Indonesia. From the bustling port of Perth – and it’s fashionable easy living lifestyle the mystical charm of Bali, travel on this voyage of two halves. Every Australian town is a gem, but surely the crowning glory of this voyage is the three maiden calls in Indonesia: Kupang, Dili and Ended.

Highlights of this cruise:

Fremantle (Perth), Australia
The port city of Fremantle is a jewel in Western Australia’s crown, largely because of its colonial architectural heritage and hippy vibe. Freo (as the locals call it) is a city of largely friendly, interesting, and sometimes eccentric residents supportive of busking, street art, and alfresco dining. Like all great port cities, Freo is cosmopolitan, with mariners from all parts of the world strolling the streets—including thousands of U.S. Navy personnel on rest and recreation throughout the year. It’s also a good jumping-off point for a day trip to Rottnest Island, where lovely beaches, rocky coves, and unique wallaby-like inhabitants called quokkas set the scene.

Broome (Kimberley), Australia
Roughly 15,000 people live year-round in Broome perched on the edge of the Kimberley region of Western Australia. The population swells to over 45,000 during the tourist season as people from all over the world are drawn to the natural splendors of the Dampier Peninsula. Broome is surrounded by lush green mangroves and mudflats along Roebuck Bay, but the interior is dry and rugged like much of the Kimberley coast. The town of Broome started up around a nascent pearling industry that attracted Japanese, Chinese, Malay and Aboriginal divers to the area in an interesting mix of cultures. Chinatown is still the center of town, but nowadays the pearls are produced in modern aquaculture facilities.

Kupang, Indonesia
Don’t let first impressions cloud your judgement – while Indonesia may offer prettier destinations, Kupang’s got a real depth of character, and a visit will leave you ideally placed to explore some wonderful coastal spots. The Capital of West Nusa Tenggara has a youthful buzz to it, thanks to the sizeable student population who call it home, and the new arrivals regularly inject new life into it. Hop around on small bemos minibuses for the best way to absorb everything this lively destination has to offer. The local cuisine is mouth watering, and you’ll be salivating at the prospect of eating tender se’i babi, a form of flavourful, smoked pork. So prepare to enjoy fishing boats bobbing offshore, waterfalls sloshing down rocks, and beaches offering all of the space you need to unwind, during your call in Kupang.

Dili, East Timor
When a city is known as the “City of Peace” you know more or less what to expect. Known for its troubled history, more than for its superb dive sites, Dili is a fascinating patchwork of Christianity, independence, sandy beaches and Indonesian culture. In a nutshell, Dili’s history can be traced back to 1520, when it was settled by the Portuguese (which accounts for the 99% Christianity rate). However, invasion in WWII saw it briefly passed to the Japanese, before being returned to Indonesia in 1945. The capital of East Timor, it was declared an independent state in 1975, but was invaded by the Indonesians nine days later. A 25-year war ensued (amid much media coverage), resulting in the UN intervening and forcing a truce in 1999, with peace declared in 2002. However, the City of Peace wears its name well, and locals are keen to shake off the shackles of their past.

Ende Flores, Indonesia
The town of Ende is found on the south coast of Flores, part of the Lesser Sunda Islands. Ende is also the capital city of Indonesia’s Ende Regency. Unlike many other places in Indonesia, the town and the island are predominantly Roman Catholic as they were under Portuguese rule for some 300 years. Ende is the gateway to the Kelimutu National Park to see the three coloured lakes of Kelimutu. To get there one will have to drive through the Indonesian rainforest and eventually climb up to see the “Lake of Young Men and Maidens”, the “Bewitched Lake” and the “Lake of Old People” –all of which not only have different colours controlled by the changes in chemical conditions, but also a distinctive physical structure, and a unique geochemical and hydrothermal regime.

Komodo Island, Indonesia
Komodo, the volcanic island of giant lizards, lies 320 miles (515 kilometres) east of Bali. Komodo is 25 miles (40 kilometres) long and 12 miles (19 kilometres) wide; its parched hills ascend to a height of 2,410 feet (734 metres). Komodo is home to a community of some 2000 people who make their living primarily from fishing. The island is the centrepiece of the Komodo National Park, where you will find the most tangible legacy left behind from the Jurassic Era. Komodo Island was little-known and the Komodo dragons were only a myth until the giant lizards were scientifically described in 1912 . Extinct almost everywhere else, the island attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world who come to see the Komodo dragons in their natural habitat. Komodo National Park has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve.

Bali (Benoa), Indonesia
Bali really is as alluring as everyone says. This island, slightly bigger than Delaware, has it all: beaches, volcanoes, terraced rice fields, forests, renowned resorts, surfing, golf, and world-class dive sites. But what sets Bali apart from other nearby tropical destinations is Balinese tradition, and villagers dedicated to celebrating it. The hundreds of temples, dances, rituals, and crafts linked to their ancient Hindu faith aren’t a show for tourists, but a living, breathing culture in which visitors are warmly received by the Balinese, who cherish their own identities.
