_______________

Scotland has a rich maritime history and it`s sailors, engineers, designers and ships have helped to shape the modern world. Explore the seafaring heritage of the east coast on a voyage of discovery from the Highland capital of Inverness to Leith, Edinburgh`s deep-water port on the Firth of Forth.

En route from Inverness, stand in awe of Fort George, one of the most outstanding fortifications in Europe. It was built in the wake of the Battle of Culloden as a secure base for King George II`s army. Based in the bustling port of Fraserburgh, the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses tells the great story of the Northern Lighthouse Board, the engineers who built the lights and the keepers who tended them. Step back in time as you walk through 125 years of turbulent history inside Scotland`s toughest jail. The former Victorian HM Convict Prison Peterhead now houses a museum which highlights the work of the brave personnel that served there. Close to the busy harbour, Aberdeen`s Maritime Museum tells the story of the city`s long and often dramatic relationship with the sea, from the earliest days of trading, fishing and shipbuilding, to offshore energy and life in the industry. Built in Dundee in 1900, RRS Discovery was the ship which carried Captain Scott on his first expedition across the Antarctic. Learn the full Discovery story and the history of seafaring in the North Sea. Now berthed in Leith, HMY Britannia is the most special of royal residences. Follow in the footsteps of royalty and explore this floating royal residence on a fascinating tour.

Guest Speaker - John Lippiett: John Lippiett had a 36 year career in the Royal Navy which included command of 3 ships at different seniorities, a frigate squadron and the School of Maritime Warfare, and culminating in three appointments at flag rank. He took early retirement in 2003 and became Chief Executive of the Mary Rose Trust. He now lectures extensively on Maritime History, from the Phoenicians four thousand years ago, all the way through to recent history such as the Falklands War of `82 (in which he served as second in command of a frigate), and into today`s troubled world.
