DAY TO DAY IN-DEPTH ITINERARY:

Day 1 (Friday): 29 March 2019 Arrive Kolkata

After clearing immigration and customs, step into the receiving area where you will be met by a representative and transferred to the hotel. Arrive and check-in to the hotel.

Day 2 (Saturday): 30 March 2019 Kolkata

Kolkata, also known as the City of Joy, name comes from the lively and friendly and loving behavior of all the citizens all over the places making the city more lively and enjoyable. Today you will do a half day city tour visiting the Howrah Bridge. This amazing feat of engineering is similar in size to Australia`s Sydney Harbour bridge. It is considered the busiest bridge in the world and everything from pedestrians to bullock carts to push carts to automobiles to bicycles cross every day and the eastern India`s largest flower market with hundreds of stalls and vendors sitting on the ground. Thereafter, visit the Victoria Memorial. This marble-white monument is one of the most fascinating landmarks of Kolkata. Here, come face to face with miniature paintings and images of Queen Mary, King George V and Queen Victoria. Of special importance are the Queen`s dresses, the famous Rosewood piano, the Whispering Gallery in the dome and numerous artillery weapons used in the Battle of Plassey.

Post sightseeing you will return back to the hotel and relax for the day, however driver will be at disposal should you wish to shop or explore more on your own (time limits apply)

Day 3 (Sunday): 31 March 2019 Kolkata - Guwahati flight & board M.V. Mahabaahu

Arrive at the Guwahati International Airport and with packed lunch, you will drive through the busy streets to the Kamakhya Temple. This Temple is devoted to Kamakhya, the eternal Feminine - the goddess of desire. After the Temple visit, drive towards Pandu Port and check into the cruise and gather on the open deck to enjoy the first sail. A quick orientation and we de-board for a short visit of the picturesque Peacock Island, the smallest island on the Brahmaputra (flight time permitting) famous for the highly endangered Golden Langur. It would be a good idea to have binoculars and cameras at hand. Proceed into the evening with a talk on `Kamakhya and the occult in Assam`.

Soon MV Mahabaahu drops anchor and the evening follows into the welcome dinner.

Day 4 (Monday): 01 April 2019 Village visit/Full day Sail

MV Mahabaahu lifts anchor early. Enjoy Yoga on the deck for an hour and move on for breakfast. Then a talk on `Assam, its geographical location in the national and international context and how it is acclaiming recognition`. MV Mahabaahu heads on towards an island that is occupied predominantly by a Bangla-speaking Muslim community who are involved in extensive farming. After visiting this village, return to the ship for lunch and sail towards the Orang Point. Evening sets in and over a cup of tea and you will enjoy a talk on `The River Brahmaputra and the tribal life`. Anchor at a deserted island for the evening and enjoy a bonfire and a barbeque.

NOTE: (Bonfire may be avoided if a suitable sandbank cannot be found or if there are inclement weather conditions)

Day 5 (Tuesday): 02 April 2019 Sail to Silghat / Visit Tea Estate AND/OR Jute Mill

MV Mahabaahu sails early and so you can enjoy Yoga on the deck and move on for breakfast, then a talk on `Wild life in Kaziranga with an overview of the wild life in India`. Sail on for the next couple of hours and enjoy a relaxed lunch as you reach Silghat. After a talk on `Tea, Jute & Silk in Assam`, take a short drive to Kaliabore Tea Estate which is a vast undulating expanse. We proceed to the tea factory to see the processing of the Assam Tea and getting an insight into all that goes into preparing a good brewed relishing cup-of-tea. While returning to the ship, you will visit a co-operative Jute Mill which is an interesting place to understand how the Jute fibre takes the form of very eco-friendly gunny bags.

Enjoy a cultural evening on the ship followed by an early dinner.

Day 6 (Wednesday): 03 April 2019 Kaziranga National Park / Weaver’s Village at Bishwanath Ghat

An early wake- up call with tea/coffee and then set out towards the Kaziranga National Park. The most prized inhabitant of Kaziranga is the Greater One-Horned Indian Rhinoceros, but the Park is home to as many as 180 different mammals including wild elephant, tiger, deer, Asiatic wild buffalo and a rich variety of birds. You will reach the Kohora Mihimukh range of the National Park and are ready to start your morning adventure. An elephant-back safari is an experience, to search for the elusive rhinoceros, tigers, swamp deer, hog deer and more besides a large number of very interesting birds. The park never ceases to surprise its visitors. After breakfast at a resort in Kaziranga, drive on to Bagori, the Western Range of Kaziranga and get into the open jeeps for some more wildlife adventure and an extensive coverage of this magnificent park. You will return to MV Mahabaahu to enjoy a leisurely lunch and as set sail towards Bishwanath Ghat. Board excursion boats to reach the shores of Bishwanath Ghat. Walk through the village and watch the weaver women with their silk and cotton weaves. Return to the ship to enjoy an evening on a deserted island (weather permitting) and then proceed for dinner onboard.

Day 7 (Thursday): 04 April 2019 Boat Safari

Enjoy a relaxed breakfast over a talk on `The River Brahmaputra and the life that exists alongside`. Then proceed for the boat safari, viewing roof turtles on protruding drift wood, water lizards, otters, elephants, wild buffaloes, rhinos, darters, herons, pied kingfishers, white throated kingfishers, serpent eagles and many more. (The sightings are determined by the weather conditions). Return to the ship for hot lunch. This evening, enjoy the Chef`s Cooking Demonstration and sample the snacks.

Day 8 (Friday): 05 April 2019 Mishing Village Visit

After Yoga and breakfast, sail towards the Mishing Village. The Mishings live on the bank of river in Chang Ghars - houses with raised platforms. All Mishing women are expert weavers. We can buy the ethnic colorful cotton weaves and indulge in a dhoti tying and Mekhela Chaadar wearing demonstration. Return to the ship to enjoy a talk on `Sibsagar and the Ahom civilization` and proceed to get ready for a Traditional Assamese evening followed by a sumptuous dinner.

Day 9 (Saturday): 06 April 2019 Majuli Visit / Neamati Ghat / Sibsagar

After breakfast, join a talk on `Majuli the seat of Neo –Vaishnav Culture` and then proceed in your excursion boats to the mainland. Here on, a drive takes you to a scenic corner of a Satra (Monastery) for an interesting cultural performance by Satriya singers and dancers. Next, proceed to Kamlabari Satra to witness the Vaishnavite priests dancing to the rhythm of cymbals, drums and chanting in the temple premise. The humble dwellings of the monks are a revelation of utmost simplicity. Then enjoy lunch on MV Mahabaahu as you sail towards Neamati Ghat. Post lunch, drive through the countryside to reach Sibsagar, the ancient city, built around a huge man made water tank ordered by the Ahom queen. A town that literally means `the ocean of Lord Shiva`. Sibsagar was the capital of the Tai-speaking Ahoms who came in the 13th Century AD to the area from the north-east and were essentially of Tibeto-Burman origin. The Shiva Dol, constructed in the year 1734 is believed to be one of the highest Shiva temple in India. Visit Talatal or Kareng Ghar which was the palace of the Ahom Kings and after a leisurely stroll in and around the monument, go on to Rang Ghar which was a place for hosting wrestling bouts and buffalo fights and other entertainment or important meetings of the Royals and their guests. Return to MV Mahabaahu by sunset for the farewell dinner.

Day 10 (Sunday): 07 April 2019 Disembark & flight to Delhi

Morning is at leisure to enjoy, Yoga/bird-watching or perhaps an early morning indulgence in the spa. A relaxed breakfast awaits all (Baggage down prior to breakfast is requested for easy de-boarding) Then you will be transferred to the Jorhat airport en-route stopping at a tea Estate to enjoy a traditional Assamese early lunch. Drive on to the airport to board the flight to the Delhi. On arrival you will be received and transfer to the hotel booked for overnight stay.

Day 11 (Monday): 08 April 2019: Depart from Delhi, Fly to Colombo, Sri Lanka

In time assisted departure transfer to the airport. Fly from Delhi to Colombo, Transfer to hotel for start of your National Geographic Journey`s tour. There will be a welcome meeting at 6.15pm at hotel

Day 12 (Tuesday): 09 April 2019 - Colombo/Wilpattu National Park

Depart early and visit a coconut plantation, learning about farming and popular coconut-based products. Continue north to Wilpattu National Park, known for its leopard population. Explore the park on a 4x4 and meet with a local expert to hear about conservation efforts and the issues of human encroachment on wildlife reserves. Overnight at a safari camp, located just outside the National Park. Wilpattu is the oldest National Park in the Country and home to Sri Lankan leopards and we will do our best to search some out with our local ranger. As well, enjoy the stunning flora and fauna, keeping an eye out for elephants, wild boar, sloth bear, spotted deer and water buffalo. Our safari camp is located 10 minutes to the Southern boundary of the park enterence, on the boundary of a lake, surrounded by bush forest.

Day 13 (Wednesday): 10 April 2019 - Wilpattu National Park/Anuradhapura

Travel to the sacred city of Anuradhapura — a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk through the ruins and discover ancient Buddhist monasteries and temples. Enjoy some free time this afternoon and opt to rent a bike.

Day 14 (Thursday): 11 April 2019 - Anuradhapura/Dambulla

Enjoy a walk through Habarana, a rural farming village, and learn about daily life. Relax with a canoe trip on the lake, ride on a bull cart, taste a local lunch, and venture out into the rice and vegetable fields. Later, continue on to Dambulla for the evening.

Head to Sigiriya (Lion) rock fortress and climb the steps to the top of this captivating site to discover UNESCO-listed ruins and take in stellar views. After, enjoy some free time to explore Dambulla.

Day 16 (Saturday): 13 April 2019 - Dambulla/Kandy

Tour the impressive Dambulla Cave Temple and admire ancient Buddhist murals and statues then visit a spice garden in Matale to learn about the theraputic uses of local spices. Continue on to Kandy and enjoy a tour of the Temple of the Tooth, which houses an important relic — a tooth of Lord Buddha kept in a well-preserved golden casket. This evening, listen to some traditional music at a cultural show.

Day 17 (Sunday): 14 April 2019 - Kandy

Today, visit the impressive Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya, considered a national asset. Enjoy the lush surroundings, pavilions, conservancy, orchid house, and stunning Javan fig tree. After, visit Sthree Craft Shop and Café, a G for Good-supported social enterprise that helps local women and youth. Here, we view a handicraft demonstration, listen to a lecture lecture, and enjoy afternoon high tea. Taste local teas, scones, clotted cream, jam, and an assortment of sweet cakes and pastries. Later, enjoy some free time to walk through the city and around Kandy Lake.

Day 18 (Monday): 15 April 2019 - Kandy/Nuwara Eliya

Travel through scenic mountains to the tea-producing town of Nuwara Eliya, stopping at a traditional tea plantation in the central highlands to gain insight into the process of growing tea and its effect on the Ceylon region. Enjoy a cup of perfectly blended pure Ceylon tea then continue exploring the English countryside atmosphere which was once governed by English and Scottish planters. Walk through the green grass and lanes, enjoying stunning views of this countryside hamlet. Opt to enjoy high tea at the Grand Hotel (extra USD $15 pp paid direct)

Day 19 (Sunday): 16 April 2019 - Nuwara Eliya/Udawalawe

Enjoy a picnic breakfast and hike through the highlands in Horton Plains National Park. Continue on to our tented camp on the border of Udawalawe National Park. This evening, enjoy a cooking demonstration by the camp chef to learn about local specialties.

Day 20 (Monday): 17 April 2019 - Udawalawe

Enjoy a wildlife safari drive into the park to observe elephants who are in abundance here. After, visit and enjoy a lecture at the Elephant Transit Home, a haven for orphaned elephants who are rehabilitated then released back into the wild, many directly into Udawalawe National Park. Udawalawe is a sanctuary for large herds of elephants, and the national park proves to be one of the best places to observe them in their natural habitat. Hop into a safari jeep and head into the park, but keep an eye out for other wildlife such as spotted deer, sambur, barking deer, water buffalo and jackal - all found within the park.

Drive to Negombo and enjoy free time to explore the city and check out the beautiful Portuguese and Dutch architecture.
