in France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Poland and the Netherlands

Here are answers to some frequently asked questions about this unique style of holiday.

A unique experience

Your self-drive hire boat cruise is all about peace and tranquillity whilst you remain as active as you want to be. On board your Pénichette®, you will relax at last in charge of what you do, where you go, and when. You go at your own pace. Driving your boat is easy and great fun and you’ll discover marvellous places and enjoy a great range of activities and new French dishes along the way.

Easy cruising:

A simple and practical initiation will teach you how to cruise on these boats. A technician will give you all the instructions you need to ensure you feel at ease :

You will learn about how to use the equipment, engine and 'command' post. In no time at all, you will feel at home in your boat. Locaboat recommends that you spend the first night in your base, to ensure the best possible conditions for 'taking possession' of your new living space and so that you can check all the equipment you need to make your holiday as enjoyable as possible.

The following morning, you and your crew can head off on your cruise with total peace of mind. You will be the captain on board, able to tackle every facet of the cruising: manoeuvres, stopping, passing through locks.

Passing through a lock is a particularly special moment of your trip. You can chat with the lock-keeper, sometimes buy local produce, meet other holidaymakers and exchange some useful addresses, or simply enjoy the break to soak up the local atmosphere and landscape. Manoeuvres require a crew of at least two agile people.

Safety and comfort

Locaboat boat models have a range of safety equipment: it is easy to move around on board, using the wide gangways, protected by guardrails, and the huge, stable sun decks. In addition, children's life jackets are provided as standard. Every effort has been made to ensure you feel at home: outdoors intimacy combined with the interiors, the spacious bedroom, the hot and cold water of the shower, forced-air heating and central heating, the copious amounts of storage space available. Sheets and blankets are supplied.

Boating legislation

To drive a self-drive hire boat from Locaboat requires no qualifications nor previous experience. We are allowed to rent a properly fitted out and certified boat for cruising in regions popular with tourists (but only where there is little commercial traffic) because we are fully insured ourselves. In France, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands and the Venetian Lagoon, Locaboat has authorisation from the local authorities to rent out boats without your having to purchase a licence yourself. Theoretical and practical training before you set off on your cruise will ensure that you know how to drive your boat and understand the essential cruising rules.

Spacious and comfortable boats

Whatever model of Locaboat you choose, we do everything we can to make you feel at home. They are spacious, light and airy, with comfortable seating, heating and plenty of hot and cold water. You will love the social get-together areas, both inside and on deck. The cabins have comfy beds with bed-linen provided and also have a good range of storage possibilities, an important feature of our boats. Heating is provided with gas, using a forced-air heating system or by diesel oil in some models.

All the equipment you need on board

On board every Locaboat boat, you will find all the crockery and kitchen utensils you need for cooking – breakfast, lunch or a romantic dinner, whether in the heart of the countryside or moored up in a port. There’s an ironing board, oven, refrigerator, sink and cooking pans, saucepans and enough assorted crockery for the maximum number of passengers on board. Similarly, you’ll find all the bedding (sheets, duvets, pillows) and a set of towels matching the number of passengers. You’ll feel at home in no time at all!

Supplements to be paid on arrival

The base will require payment of the following supplements prior to departure:

Fuel advance

The hourly rate is displayed in all the bases. As an illustration, the daily price varies from €20 to €35, depending on the type of boat and the price of diesel.

This advance is calculated according to the length of your trip and will be deducted from the sum to be paid when you return.

Damage deposit / Damage waiver

All our boats are covered for all accidental damage (i.e. collision with another boat, buildings…) suffered by our boat, dinghy or to a third party by the use of the boat. However, the captain may still also be financially liable for additional penalties if he has broken navigation rules or willfully caused an accident. Passengers on board the boat, their personal effects and their public liability are not covered by this insurance.

Please note: in Italy, you will be asked for a credit or debit card imprint to cover any fines, and any costs incurred in connection with being re-floated after running aground.

Damage deposit

•             Loss or breakage of equipments on the boat (inventory), bad maintenance and non accidental damages to the boat.

•             Abandonment of the boat during the cruise by the client or the late return of the boat.

•             Damage.

Damage Waiver

•             Exemption from the damage deposit.

•             Exemption from the expenses of repair in case of damage, except in case of exclusion of the guarantees of assurance (see our general conditions of sale).

•             No exemption from the payment of the losses and breakage or expenses incurred by the abandonment of the vessel (see the two first points of the paragraph ‘Damage deposit’).

•             The damage waiver does not exempt from the payment of the advance on fuel.
